Eight Things to Do in Prague When You Visit in Autumn

Autumn is a beautiful time of year to visit Prague. The color of the leaves on trees turning golden as they start their descent for  the winter, the smell of fresh baked pies coming from windowsills, and the chilly air nipping at your nose. There’s just something about autumn that makes it special. And if you’re lucky enough to be spending time in Prague during this magical season, then you’re in for a treat. Here are seven things to do in Prague when you visit in autumn:

1. Visit the Dancing House

The Dancing House, also known as Fred and Ginger, is one of the most iconic buildings in Prague. It was designed by Frank Gehry and completed in 1996. The building gets its name from the two dancers who are featured on the roof. The house is located on the riverbank next to Charles Bridge and offers great views of the city.

The history of the Dancing House is a bit controversial. The original design was rejected by the city because they felt it didn’t fit in with the traditional architecture of Prague. However, after some changes were made, it was finally approved and construction began.

Today, the Dancing House is a popular tourist attraction and is often used for events and weddings. There is a restaurant on the top floor with amazing views of Prague. To get there, take tram 22 to Malá Strana or walk across Charles Bridge from Old Town Square.

2. Travel in time in the Prague Castle

The Prague Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Prague. It’s also one of the largest castles in the world, covering over 7 hectares. The castle was originally built in the 9th century and has been rebuilt and expanded many times over the years. One of the most famous landmarks in the castle is  Saint Vitus Cathedral, which was built in the 14th century.

The Prague Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains a number of museums, churches, palaces, and other buildings. Some of the highlights include St. Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane, and the Royal Palace.

To get to the Prague Castle, take tram 22 to Malá Strana or walk across Charles Bridge from Old Town Square. There are also a few restaurants and cafes near the castle if you want to stop for lunch or coffee.

3. Explore the Jewish Quarter

Prague’s Jewish Quarter is one of the most interesting and historic parts of the city. It’s home to several synagogues, including the Old-New Synagogue, which is the oldest synagogue in Europe. The quarter also has a cemetery and a Holocaust Memorial.

4. Walk across the Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in Prague. It was built in the 14th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bridge is 6 meters wide and has 16 statues of saints on either side.

The bridge is a popular tourist attraction and is often crowded with people walking, biking, and skateboarding. It’s a great place to take photos of the city skyline. The best time to visit is in the evening when the sun is setting and the bridge is lit up. The Charles Bridge is also a great place to go for a romantic a walk in the autumn when the leaves are changing color. Especially when the sun sets the color of the statues  and the river turn to a beautiful golden hue.

5. Take your spouse to the Prague National Opera

The Prague National Opera is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city. The opera has beautiful architecture and an impressive performance schedule. There are usually more performances and events at the opera in September and October, so it’s a great time to visit.

There are usually a variety of operas and ballets being performed at the Prague National Opera. You can see everything from classic operas like “Don Giovanni” to modern ballets like “The Nutcracker”. There is something for everyone at the opera.

If you’re not an opera fan, don’t worry. The Prague National Opera also has a theater program. You can see plays, musicals, and other performances at the theater. There is usually something for everyone at the theater as well.

6. Old Town Square

Old Town Square is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Prague. There are a lot of things to see and do in Old Town Square, including watching the Astronomical Clock, taking a horse-drawn carriage ride, or simply people watching. The square is open all year round, but it’s especially beautiful in autumn especially if you are the romantic type.

7. Clear your mind and relax Stromovka Park

The Stromovka Park is a large public park in Prague. It’s a great place to go for a walk or to relax. The park is open all year round, but it’s especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves are changing color.

King Pemysl Otakar II created Prague’s Royal Park in 1268, and the Hapsburg dynasty extended it in the 16th and early 17th centuries. In the years 1536–1548, Emperor Ferdinand I extended it all the way to Prague Castle. The outdated Summer Palace had a Renaissance makeover under Emperor Rudolph II. The Rudolf’s Pond in Prague was largely filled in in 1804 to create a number of smaller bodies of water and a number of meadows, which later became known as the Stromovka Park. The planting of several decorative and exotic tree species completed the magnificent natural composition. The construction of the Exhibition Grounds, the tram loop, the canal and railway line, and other infrastructure at the end of the 19th century determined its ultimate configuration.

8. Picking apples at an apple orchard

If you’re visiting Prague in autumn, then you should definitely go apple picking at an apple orchard. It’s a great way to spend a day outside and it’s also a lot of fun. Plus, you’ll get to take home some delicious apples that you can eat or use to make pies and other desserts. You should know that apples are Prague’s biggest export and a trademark for the country. There are a few different apple orchards near Prague that you can visit. The best time to go is usually from mid-September to mid-October. So, if you’re visiting Prague during that time, make sure to go apple picking!
